Type of problem:
Intensive groundwater exploitation for irrigation; low reliability of water supply during droughts.
Specific challenges:
Seawater intrusion, depletion of groundwater levels, reversal of river-aquifer relationship.
Solutions proposed:
MAR feasibility mapping at regional scale at Júcar Water District, numerical modelling for validation at local scale at Belcaire pond (storage pond to store water from peak surface flows in order to recharge the Rambleta aquifer) and Algar reservoir (surface dam to retain water during peak flows and infiltrate them into the Fuente de Quart and Plana de Sagunto aquifers)
AGREEMAR expected impact:
Conjunctive use of groundwater and surface water(a); improved water quality and increased availability or recovered water for irrigation; enabling efficient MAR implementation.
